Approaching Port Morgaine by Drell-7 Approaching Port Morgaine by Drell-7
One of the coolest looking ships ever designed for Traveller, the 200 ton Alexandria class Free Trader, designed by my buddy Arcas. I built and textured this model in Lightwave a while ago, but when I saw jncarter's spectacular "Mountains" piece, I just had to drag the old girl out again!
Lightwave 10 and Photoshop. Thanks for taking a look!

Very nice rendering, any possibility of some plans?

The plans were published in FASA's Adventure Class Ships Volume 2, many years ago. Rob Caswell created the design.

When I first saw this I thought it was an Adder from the PC game Elite. :)

The background is by jncarter, but on my end, I use Lightwave 10, then bring it in to Photoshop for tweaking, touch ups and composting.

YOU did the hard work-designing this gorgeous tub! And JNCarter produced a backdrop that just kind of begged to be used!

For me, what brings this ship to life is the paint job you gave her. It really pops! :la:

Not to mention the overall composition of the piece is excellent. Great job, good sir!

Thanks. That paint job always brings back fond memories of the French Quarter of New Orleans. I tried to put a little of the feeling of age, a little mistreatment, but shabby elegance to the texture job.

FASA's old Adventure Class ships is the only place I know they were published. If you can't find them, let me know and (hopefully) I'll find my copy and scan them for you.

Really well done, the position of the model gives a great feeling of swooping over the clouds too.
Sometimes "dragging the old girl out again" can be the best excuse in the world :-)

Yeah, I really wanted to get "in the viewer's face" with the composition. The textures I painted for this one are unusually high resolution. And I wanted to give a feeling of power and action with the composition. Yeah, I agree-sometimes you've just got to bring out the old girl! I've been thinking about a couple of other pieces to do with her, too.

Well, well. Makes me wish I'd held on to some of my drawn-on-graph paper deckplans. I had a 300-ton trader that was a vague 'spaceplane' design...

What... you mean... DRAW something?!? On dead tree??? (screams in fright and dives behind the couch)

Joking aside... I suppose I could. If it upset some 'die-hard' Traveller grognards in the process, it'd be worth it...

I used to game with a 'proto-grognard' back in the 80s... He managed to suck all the fun out of the game like a black hole on amphetamines.

But yeah, upsetting them is very easy. Just open your mouth and say something.

Seriously tho--well done Drell7! Nice backdrop too! Here I am writing for Mongoose about some folks about to drop in on the ice world of Argona in the Trojan Reach...

Well, yeah! :D She IS named the New Orleans, after all! The Alexandria class takes all their names from famous or historic Port cities.

I didn't know you wrote for Mongoose! That's very cool. I hope I've provided a tiny bit of mood to help the work.

Two colors that you would not think of using together but work well in any case.

Great results.

I think you can get away with a lot of unorthodox color combos by carefully watching tone and shade. This one is helped by the scuffs and other surface effects that modulate the colors.

Definitely a good way, and the color is part of it. Star Trek eggshell white only goes so far. People detailing their ships like they'd detail their cars, or branding it with company logos... all totally expected :) Love it :)
