Black Knight by Drell-7 Black Knight by Drell-7
This is a piece I did for Catalyst Game Labs last year for a Battletech book. Possibly the ugliest, most unbalanced 'Mech ever, with that big cannon strapped to one arm. But I think the illo came out okay, and doing the dropship bay and ramp was cool...

Lightwave and Photoshop

Thanks for having a look!

Thanks! I spent seven years doing Battletech work for FASA Interactive and Virtual World. I'll have to dig up some of that and post it. This is a piece I did for Catalyst, for one of their game books.

I'm teaching a friend in Romania to play Battletech TCG over skype, so I decided to modernize all of the cards. I used your art for Black Knight BL6-KNT [link]

I thought there was supposed to be a shield or something to balance it out?

Not that I could find in the reference. But you're right, it would help.

Aw, I quite like the 'Mech. I guess the whole fixed horizontal barrel of the arm cannon bothers me the most, even if its "quirk"

mmh, great perspective!! love the head [while the area between the legs looks so bloody ugly, its embarrassing (not your fault)]
and i especially love the techs and the smoke looks really great!

Yeah, I tried to modify the pelvis to make it a little, but you kind of need to stick to the established design. The smoke (steam?) was the art director's idea, and it really worked well. The techs give a human focus amid all the heavy metal, and they establish scale really well! I'm glad you like the overall package! :D

Hey, thats good to hear! I really enjoyed doing my part on that project. I think, functionally, the BK is a very formidable beast. Just wish that barrel was a tad shorter...

It is a beast. One of my favorite scrummers. I typically team it up with either a Marauder 5T or 7D, and Orion ON2-M.

Always thought the Orion was the most lopsided mech in the BTU :)

Did a great job with this, love all the small details and great perspective.

Oh, I think there are several 'mechs that would be in the running for THAT title! Thanks, I tried to give it some believable details, and provide some sense of scale with the detailing. Perspective is really important to making the more ungainly 'mechs look imposing. I figured looking up at one of these monsters coming down a ramp at you would be pretty dramatic!:D

The Capellan 'Thunder' is one... and the original VTR 'Victor' with that honking great AC/20 occupying its right arm and torso side is another.

I always wondered if those machines would be vulnerable to getting pushed from the left side...
