Meeting the New Patron by Drell-7 Meeting the New Patron by Drell-7
This is the second piece I did for next year's Traveller calander, which a bunch of artists, headed by Andrew Bolton, get together to do every year for a charity cause. This image shows a typical scene from a Traveller campaign; the arrival of the new Patron. This time, he arrives, with retinue, in two Grav sportscars, as the captain and first officer wait anxiously on the taemac in front of their freighter.

modeled and rendered in Lightwave, and Daz/Studio 3, composited and post worked in Photoshop.
Thanks for taking a look!

Heh. Three Suns instead of Blue Sun...

Or is the association/allusion only in my head?

Not a conscious reference, it was a logo graphic first, and name later. In this case, the name refers to a small merchant company, that owns a few Subsidized Merchant ships.

He's a Droyne. The ship's engineer, in fact.

Oh good! At least it's not a Hiver. Never know what they are plotting.

Great memories... and since I have almost all my old books still (Anybody have a line on 'Nomads of the Ocean World'?) maybe its time to consider pulling it out and running some for my son & daughter...

Great Pic! You and Arcass are driving me down memory lane. I still have my little black books and all my Mega-Traveller stuff too. How about an Aslan next time? My favorite character was an Aslan noble male that I played with 3 different GMs for over ten years of his life. My group ended up working for Arch-Duke Norris. Those were the days of great gaming!

a fantastic pic!! Jaw hit the floor when I saw not only all the awesome Traveller ships (and yes, that's the only way I spell it ;) ) you had a Droyne too. Droyne Technician perhaps? Wonderful scene and superbly done!!! Where can we get the calendar? Travellerrpg.com?

Thanks for the comments! He is, in fact, a Droyne Tech, and ship's engineer. You can get the calendar here: [link]

very nice Droyne character you have there, not sure about the "fat-trader" but all the elements fit together nicely, beautiful composition and lighting. Definately something that would look good on any calendar.

Thanks, karuna! I can see you're another "old-school" guy! I had some fun (and frustration) with that Droyne, but I think he came out pretty well.:D The Fat Trader design is the one I drew in Starship Operator's Manual, its based on the Dave Dietrick design on the cover of the MegaTraveller box.

Its probably just me, we still use the fat trader from that JTAS adventure, forget the name now but I'll dig out my box of journals now as its piqued my interest just who did design the one we use now. They don't come much more old school lol, been playing traveller since the first set arrived in england (my dad brought it back from a trip to the states a month after its release) and remember well having to basically petition stores over here to import items.

To this day, I have to set up all my spell checkers to make sure I don't spell Traveler with two L's. Those were the good old days.

I'm not sure I ever saw the final on this one, either. Came out NICE! Great looking characters and it was neat to see you prove out my theory on the repurposed Droyne. Now if you don't translate that Fat Trader and Alexandria into Poser-compatible OBJs, I might have to publish those pics of you and the dolphin twins.....
